Understanding Mesh Count

Mesh count is the number of openings per linear inch, measured from the center of one wire to the center of the adjacent wire. It is the most fundamental specification parameter.

For example, a 100-mesh screen has 100 openings per linear inch. Higher mesh counts mean finer filtration and smaller openings.

Pro Tip: Mesh count alone doesn't define the opening size — wire diameter also plays a critical role. Two 100-mesh screens with different wire diameters will have different opening sizes.

Wire Diameter and Gauge

Wire diameter is the thickness of the wire used to weave the mesh, typically measured in millimeters or inches. It directly affects the strength, durability, and open area of the mesh.

Opening Size and Open Area

The opening size is the distance between adjacent wires, calculated from the mesh count and wire diameter. Open area percentage represents the ratio of open space to total screen area.

Important: For filtration applications, always specify the opening size in addition to mesh count. This eliminates ambiguity caused by different wire diameter combinations.

Weave Patterns

There are three primary weave patterns for wire mesh:

  • Plain Weave: Each warp wire passes alternately over and under each weft wire. Most common and economical.
